Nov. 28th, 2020 05:02 pmI looked up Dar Williams, and is this what y’all mean by neoliberalism? She imagines a foreign child trapped in a cycle of violence, and that she’ll come over and give the child culture in order to save him. She doesn’t engage with how the violence started. She doesn’t engage with the likelihood that political leaders in her country benefit from continuing the violence. She doesn’t engage with the people in the child’s country who are already trying to stop the violence. She doesn’t engage with what culture the child already has that’s distinct from the culture she wants to teach him. And of course she doesn’t engage with the ways people in her country benefit from taking these children and “educating” them in her country’s culture (and frequently religion.) It’s like the White Man’s Burden as written by people who use solar panels.
