I think you’d get more mileage from comparing them to the terrorists they were supposedly eliminating. “Our community is under attack from outsiders, and we need to kill them to keep our families safe. And whenever we blow up some teenage boy who was minding his own business, he was probably an enemy anyway.”
(This isn’t my case for hating soldiers more. This is my case for hating terrorists less. I don’t think hating any such group is useful for getting people to quit the group.)
